Grappling with isolation and lack of affection
My name is Natalie Maximin, and I would like to share a glimpse into my journey. My experience with loneliness began during my marriage when I was seven months pregnant. It was a time that should have been filled with joy and anticipation, but instead, I found myself grappling with isolation and a lack of affection from my husband. Balancing the physical challenges of pregnancy with the emotional weight of feeling unsupported has been incredibly hard. Often, I’ve felt a profound ache of being “unseen” during such a vulnerable and transformative moment in my life.
As a woman, I believe everyone deserves deep love and connection, and it’s been challenging to feel that I’m not receiving it despite the investment I’ve made in my relationships. I have always poured my heart into my marriage, friendships, family, and motherhood. Still, I often feel unheard, as if the affection I offer has not been reciprocated. It weighs heavily on my heart to consider why I’ve devoted so much energy to those who didn’t fully appreciate my love.
Living within my marriage, I sometimes feel like a “single” parent. I navigate appointments, baby preparations, and the emotional journey on my own. This experience has intensified my feelings of loneliness, as I often shoulder the mental load without support.
Trapped in cycles of self-doubt
Like many, I often find myself trapped in cycles of self-doubt, questioning my worth and what I could do differently. I ask myself, “What if I’m not enough?” or “Why doesn’t he want to be close to me?” These thoughts only amplify my longing for affection. The absence of simple comforts, like cuddles and warm embraces, has left me feeling unloved and rejected.
This loneliness has morphed into feelings of hopelessness, and I recognise that it has been largely tied to my emotional well-being. Physical exhaustion during my third trimester mixed with the emotional strain of my marriage, leading to burnout I never thought I would experience.
Even when my ex-husband was physically present, there was a sense of emotional abandonment. His tendency to isolate me and create distance left me feeling single, even in the company of someone I was committed to. The transition from a loving friendship to a strained dynamic has been disheartening. I have often found myself questioning reality, longing for the partner I once knew.
Sense of worthlessness
There are moments when I feel as if he is ashamed of our relationship and our baby. It’s tough to feel invisible, especially during a time when support and connection are crucial. This sense of worthlessness can sometimes overshadow the joy of impending motherhood.
Through this journey, I find myself grappling with feelings of loss regarding my identity and confidence. My hope for redemption in our relationship has shifted over time. I once believed our beautiful son would bring us closer together. When that didn’t materialise, it deepened the sense of grief and loneliness I often feel.
On top of it all, my relationship with my son has faced challenges that have led me to a turbulent place emotionally. I cherish the connection we once had and yearn to rekindle that beautiful bond. A recent major surgery has only heightened my feelings of isolation, making the journey seem even more daunting.
The challenges I face
Despite the challenges I face, I firmly believe that hope and healing are attainable. Embracing the possibility of brighter days ahead fills me with optimism. Although I am currently steeped in struggle, I am determined to cultivate love and connection in my life, starting with myself. Thank you for allowing me to share my story. I am committed to helping other single mothers and women facing similar struggles see a bright future.
Living in London as a single mother has been challenging for me. I have faced many stereotypes and a significant amount of judgment and pain, particularly from people I thought were my friends. I became an open book, believing that being honest about my pain, my failed marriage, and my struggles as a mother would help others understand me better. Unfortunately, this only encouraged negative judgments, portraying me as a failing wife and mother. This judgment led me into anxiety and depression, making me feel lonely and misunderstood by those who chose to reject me instead of support me. Many single mothers face similar stigma and a lack of respect, with the misconception that we all come from broken homes.
I often worry about how to be a good mother and the best version of myself. I was afraid to share my symptoms of panic, hopelessness, and fears with anyone, fearing negative judgment and further isolation—even from my doctor, as I was terrified of being committed to a mental hospital or losing my son. My son is my strength, and losing him would feel like a death sentence. As a result, I chose silence, masking my symptoms and avoiding triggers.
Helped me manage my symptoms
Eventually, I made an appointment with a therapist named John, who helped me confront my fears. He introduced techniques such as self-care, meditation, yoga, breathing exercises, and walks in the park. These practices helped me manage my symptoms and alleviate my fear of panic attacks.
To me, anxiety and depression feel like a monster eating me from the inside out. Even with my family and friends trying to support me, I often felt incredibly lonely. I turned everything said to me into negativity, becoming my own worst enemy. I would come home exhausted from battling the voices in my head and would sleep just to escape them. Some nights, I felt paralysed by fear, and sleep seemed impossible, as if insomnia and depression were intertwined. Through my experiences, I’ve learned that although things can be difficult, we must keep pushing through.
I aspire to start a self-care recovery group to support people with anxiety disorders. I have spoken with many individuals who also struggle, offering reassurance that no one is alone and that freedom from panic attack fears is achievable. I want to advocate for anxiety disorders, believing that helping others can heal my soul. I encourage anyone feeling overwhelmed by anxiety and depression to reach out for help. There is no shame in seeking support to be there for your children and family.

**Healing Prayer for Those Depressed and Anxious**
Dear Lord, I surrender all those suffering from depression into Your loving hands today. May You have mercy and hear their cries for relief from this mental illness. Surround them with compassionate individuals who can support and encourage them during this challenging time. I ask that Your healing hands be upon them as they go about their daily lives and as they lay their heads down at night. Heal their brokenness, for only You can do so. Thank You, Jesus. Amen.
**Prayer to Remain Strong Even Through Difficult Times**
My Father in Heaven, I have many fears in my life, and sometimes these fears overwhelm me, causing me to lose faith. I spiral into deep, depressing thoughts. I need You, God, to strengthen my faith so that I can continue to trust in You. Help me to believe that You are the Great Conqueror, triumphing over all my negative feelings, including fear. When I am afraid, guide me in conquering it. These fears and obstacles are minor setbacks compared to Your glory. With your love and grace, I know I can prevail. Help me to grow my faith instead of giving in to fear. I ask this in Jesus’ name, with the Holy Spirit. Amen.
